Fiberglass insulation is the most common insulation found in the Brainerd Lakes area. The biggest issue with fiberglass is that it does not form a solid barrier. Just a five mph wind can cause a home insulated with traditional fiber insulation to lose as much as 46 percent of its R-Value (see chart below). The home improvement that will give you the biggest energy cost savings is replacing your fiberglass or cellulose attic insulation with spray foam. Your existing fiberglass or cellulose insulation offers less insulating power over time because it settles. Spray foam insulation hardens into a rigid barrier that retains its thickness and insulating power, and it never settles.
	Timeless Spray Foam uses closed cell spray foam. Also called high density foam because of its density of two pounds per cubic foot, closed cell spray foam insulation has an R-value of 6 to 6.5 per inch of thickness, about twice the published R-Values per inch of cellulose and fiberglass. Closed cell spray foam insulation can more than double the strength of a wall or roof deck. While the main ingredient in most spray foam insulations is polyurethane—leading spray foam insulation manufacturers now offer bio-based foams as a green option.
Research shows that about 40 percent of heating/cooling costs are attributable to air leakage through a home’s walls and attic space. Air leakage transmits noise, dirt, pollutants, moisture, and allergens. Fiberglass and cellulose are full of air spaces and cannot block this air leakage. Spray foam insulation can and does. While every home is different, experience shows that a typical homeowner might expect to reduce their annual cost somewhere between 25-60 percent after replacing fiberglass insulation with spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation offers a cost savings over time, making a substantial return on investment.
